Case Story: Education Funding
The situation:
A couple in their 60s wanted to create a college fund for their newborn first
grandchild, but they were uncertain which education funding instrument was
most appropriate.
How we helped:
We reviewed the different funding options, including 529 plans, custodial accounts
and trusts. The couple ultimately chose a 529 plan to insure the money went
towards college expenses and to maximize specific estate and tax planning
benefits. Then we recommended certain investment options within the plan.
We continue to monitor those selections as part of their overall education-funding
and estate-planning strategies.
Case Story: Saving vs. Spending
The situation:
A couple in their 30s with two young children wanted to buy a home, get life
insurance and save for retirement. Meanwhile, the increased day-to-day expenses
of a growing family limited their financial resources.
How we helped:
Weighing the couple’s financial priorities, we provided guidance on how
much of their income and savings to allocate towards a down payment, a taxable
investment account and employer 401(k) retirement plans. And while we do not
sell insurance policies or mortgages, we offered advice on appropriate types
and sizes of each. With their household investment assets, we developed diversified
portfolios for both their tax and tax-sheltered accounts.
